Amsterdam Hosts First Ever WinterFest

AMSTERDAM, NY (NEWS10) — While the past two days have certainly been mild, winter was still in the air on Saturday in Amsterdam. Crowds of people turned out throughout the day for the city’s first-ever WinterFest at Veterans Park.

“We wanted to have a day where everyone could go out into the community. Free s’mores, free hot chocolate, free dinner, free skating. It’s a good day in Amsterdam,” said Rob Spagnola, Marketing and Entertainment Manager for the City of Amsterdam.

The city’s first-ever Winterfest is also a celebration of the new outdoor ice rink set up by Alpin Haus for this winter.

“Alpin Haus has donated money to the city of Amsterdam to create the Alpin Haus ice rink. We are so excited to give back to the community that has done so much for us,” said Katie Osborn, co-owner of Alpin Haus.

With free skate rentals on Saturday, many hit the ice. “It’s great to get out and hang out with the community because we’ve been in our homes for so long,” Dan Newell said.

Both the city and Alpin Haus hope to make Winterfest an annual tradition, as a fun way to get the community out and engage in the middle of winter.

“We have spring to late fall stuff, busy stuff, we’ve been a bit dark all winter. It’s a great addition, and we’ll have all of those things here next year, not just once,” Spagnola said.

In addition to free skating, Winterfest also included free burgers and hot dogs, giving visitors the opportunity to hang out and enjoy a free lunch.

Members of the Amsterdam Police Department, as well as several local businesses, were also on hand to donate specialist items.

The new rink opened for the season as soon as the weather was cold enough to allow the ice surface to freeze completely.
